DE,

I agree - Fox should assert himself as the voice of the RIGHT. and RIGHT now. However I think the fact that a leftist media WANT DC is not without substance. WHY do they want him?

Cameron is certianly metrosexual - or he is certainly posing as one. The media are backing him, which means nothing yet.

If Fox wants to push Davis out of the way he has to move rightwards about now. Davis has nowhere to go so its down to him.

Gary,

Accepting that the Party will be led by a metropolitan liberal is the first step towards a slide to the left. Cameron was appalling on the issue of defending our soldiers in Basra, he is weak on Europe, and above all, he has no discernable principles. Picking a leftist leader will not yield anything of benefit to the forces of conservatism.

First and foremost we needed Clarke to be put out as quickly as possible. That happened and I'm relieved.

I would like Cameron to go next but that isn't happening at all. He may well win the whole shooting match.

Fox will probably go next leaving the final vote to the membership. I think they'll go for Cameron. Cameron isn't Davis or Fox which is aproblem. He isn't Clarke though and that's a mercy. If he wins then we're going to have to roughen the lad up a bit. We have time.

I surprised you are thinking "phew".

Consider this scenario: Cameron takes most of Clarkes votes. Some of the MP's that voted for Davis first round loose confidence in him, as he got less votes than he publically declared (and many less than were pledged privately). Fox gets a new-found surge of confidence and popularity because he got double what he publically declared.

Net result:
1st Cameron
2nd Fox
3rd Davis

Not an impossible scenario. In fact, in my view, quite a probable one. At least you have secured one of the candidates on the "right" to be put forward, but who do you think would win out of Fox and Cameron? My money is on the latter.
